Born in Asunción, Paraguay |
Diego looked all over the world for a suitable college computer animation program, and the only one he could find with a program lasting more than one year was in Canada. After attending Durham College in Oshawa for four years he graduated, and was permitted to stay in Canada as long as he worked in his field. He moved to Toronto and has now been here for five years doing freelance computer animation. Diego hasn’t met any other Paraguayans, but knowing that there are so many other immigrants in the city makes it feel less lonely. During his time at college he made many friends and they, along with his recently acquired dog called Bruce, make up his “Canadian family”.
Toronto as Home
Since moving to Toronto, Diego has always lived in the same neighbourhood. He loves “The Annex” because there, there are “good places to eat, it’s safe and not that crazy”. The iconic Honest Ed’s is a store he sees daily, with its beautiful lights at night and rustic look during the day. The ability to visit bustling areas nearby, but retreat quickly to his peaceful street is important to Diego. He often will discover a new business starting up, or stumble upon interesting places he had not previously noticed.
Connection with the Past
Diego’s parents gave him this hammock a few years ago. It is handmade, “so comfortable” and during the summer heat he hangs it in his front yard, stretches out with his eyes closed, relaxes all day and pretends he is back in Paraguay.
