Born in Bridgetown, Barbados |
At 18, Jamie left Barbados to attend Queen’s University in Kingston. During her studies she met her now-husband Jay, and as he was from the GTA they moved back to the area together. For Jamie her connection to Toronto is all about the people. She feels fortunate to have wonderful friends and in-laws who make being 4,000km away from her family in Barbados a little easier. Jamie also has a close circle of Bajan friends who live in Toronto, many of whom she’s known since she was a baby. She says that getting together with “friends from home” is good for the soul!
Toronto as Home
Jamie is standing inside Steam Whistle Brewery, where she and her husband got married two years ago. She explains how they had over 200 Canadian and Bajan family and friends celebrating together with them, and it will forever remain a special place for her and Jay.
Connection with the Past
Jamie’s ancestors started Mount Gay Rum, the oldest existing brand of rum in the world. The business is no longer in her family, but she says it really ties her to the island and to her history there. Plus it’s “absolutely delicious”!
